SBL Committee Slot, posted by Rien

SBL Committee Slot
Due to Mishra taking a "holiday", he has resigned from the Committee.
This means there is a 10th seat open.
The committee currently only deals with rules; such things as creating new rules, dealing with rule breakers, and modifying the current league rules centered around punishment and abuse of SBL. The future plans for the committee are extensive so it would be fair to say anyone wishing to join the committee will play a key role in shaping the future of the league.
Please read the committee rules surrounding applying for the committee. You will notice that you need a sponsor in order to apply, and that each committee member can sponsor only one individual.
I suggest, if you're serious about joining the committee, that you contact one of the current serving committee members, or Mishra, as soon as possible to try and get them to sponsor you.
Subsequently this means there will be a maximum of ten players applying to join the committee, and from that ten we will hold a vote to narrow down the possibilities. |

Dekar / Rot / Feral Rage sux, posted by Rien
Wednesday, November 12th 2008
Dekar / Rot / Feral Rage sux
Has been banned for the remainder of this season, and all of next season.
Dekar was reported to us for posessing and using the hack.
Dekar claims he has never used the energy hack in SB, and also claims he never used the hack to gain an advantage in SB - which according to the reports holds true.
Regardless, hacking is not acceptable in SBL. Dekar will now miss the remainder of this season and all of next season after two votes from the committee.
The final vote left a 5-5 tie with 5 options voting for an indefinate ban, and 5 voting for the season + next season. I have the deciding vote and decided, against my original vote, to only ban Dekar for the remainder of this season. I consider it to be unfair to indefinatly ban someone when only 50% of the casting voters agree, so I opted for the weaker option as I consider it less unfair. |

SBL Season Update + Referee Request, posted by Rien
Monday, October 13th 2008
SBL Season Update
After talking through our options with Staley we've decided the best plan of action is to continue without postponing the weekends.
What will happen is the games from Week 6 will be spread out over the next few weeks. This means a few teams will be playing multiple games in one weekend.
I will be spreading the games out now, and then posting the scheduling/prediction topics for the W7 games.
If, for some reason you see an issue with the week you've got two games and wish to move your second game to another weekend, please let me know via PM or in the captains forum - clearly I will do my best to help facilitate this request.
To save time in reposting the "logic" behind why this decision has been made over postponing a week, I’ll address that question now:
Our season finished on December 14th - postponing every week would push us to December 21st - not a good day.
We could however remove the "playoff" bye week, and consolidate the BOTR from 4 weeks into 3 weeks - this is a very, very good option
However, it is our last option. If we did that now, and this happened again we'd have less time to fit the games in around other weeks, and would probably have to have a 3 week break before the championship game.
So, in our divine wisdom we have chosen to take up this option.
Referee Request
I think it's pretty clear to see that we're going to strugle over the next 3 weeks to fit 7 games into like 8 or 9 timeslots, so I am going to need more referees.
I'd like to request any past referees who've had issues with me, or someone else, to put these issues behind you and come back and help SBL through this tough time. Suffice it to say we're going to need every hand we can get.
I'd also like to request every current referee does his up most to be available to referee games on Sunday.
If you're a returning referee you will be accepted right away - please PM me and i'll re-add you. If you're a new referee, please PM me and i'll look into hiring & training you in one week.
We need the entire league to pull together over the next 3 weeks to help ensure we continue to play SBL and complete this season. I hope you're all on board with this and will help out as much as possible. |

Porn Stars vs SBL Appeal, posted by Rien
Tuesday, October 7th 2008
Porn Stars vs SBL Appeal
The committee has reviewed & discussed the entire situation revolving around this match, and has the following conclusions:
A) The referee at the game (Terwin) did nothing wrong. He officiated the match in a fair & just manner and will continue to do so.
B) The appropriate amount of lag goals were removed. Obviously, it's impossible to judge the lag goals by video (especially when we don't have it ;) and we stand by the referee’s decision at the game.
C) Even if more lag goals were removed, the end result of the game would not have changed (Win-Loss wise).
D) The actions of the Porn Stars players are the sole reason they lost, and not the action of the referee. Everyone knows that decisions take time, and that play continues regardless. It is no one else’s fault that the game was lost other than the players on the field.
However, due to the willingness of the SBL Captain to replay the entire game, and the apparent "corrupt" and "abuse" claims being unfairly thrown around by the Porn Stars players, the SBL Committee has agreed to allow this game to be replayed. The SBL Committee will not stipulate the conditions or time of the rematch, other than it must be bound by the normal SBL scheduling rules & procedures.
Hopefully the Porn Stars captain & players feel that they've been fairly treated by the SBL Committee, but should be reminded that they will not be given rematches so lightly in future cases where their claims hold no weight, and certainly do not justify a rematch nor any action on the referee at the game. |

SBL Games & Referees, posted by Rien
Monday, October 6th 2008
SBL Games & Referees
After last night’s "issues" around the POS vs SBL game I’d like to clear up a few issues that are either unknown, or simply not common sense.
The referee’s decision is final. But, this is not real life. The referee can take a while to make a decision. In fact we suggest all of our referees take a moment to make a decision - this allows them to talk to other present referees, and maybe even captains.
For instance, in the case of a crease offense it is normal for the referee to talk to other referees to ensure they agree that the player creased, and to make sure he/she did not miss a check that forced the player into the crease. Another example would be lagging - quite often players will momentarily "spike", and assuming they're not currently effecting the game, it would be good practice to monitor them and rather than speccing them, leave them in as their lag drops. In the same sense, if they need to spec a player, it would also be considered good practice to inform the captains of this - so they have time to get a replacement in; the last thing anyone wants is for a referee to just spec a defender for lagging and possibly throw the game to the other team because the captain was not ready & aware of the spec.
And then regarding lag goals - the rules on lag goals are quite complex and distinguishing between the different types of lag is not always easy
| Quote (Rules): | Lag goals can be removed from the game with a majority vote between both participating captains and the head referee (2 out of 3).
Instances of lag goals are the following (lag goals will be determined by the referee)
A. Blatant shot directly through one player ;
B. Shot passing through the proximity of two players;
C. A goal scored due to server lag. |
As you can see, to remove a lag goal the referee AND a captain must agree to remove it, and it must be deemed a lag goal by the referee. Also, some instances of lag goals are not written here - for example if a pass appears to go past a player, but then jumps back to him this may be considered worth removing as a lag goal depending on how much it effected the play & the goal.
But in short, the referee at the game should always, and will always take his time in making these decisions - and it is completely unacceptable for him to be pestered by an entire team of players, regardless of how hard done by they feel. The only communication between the referee and the in-game players should be done using the game chat - of which representatives from each team are present in. It's acceptable to voice your concerns there in a civil manner.
The "spamming" of complaints in the public (or team spec) chat is unacceptable, and it only causes the game to be even harder to officiate. Spamming moves up important communication, distracts everyone involved, and will probably only lead to a poorer SBL experience.
In future instances, excessive spamming or abusive comments towards referees will be dealt with in a harsher manner at the time of the offense. Referees give up their time to help keep this league alive, and it is unacceptable for them to be given such an experience, even if their call is wrong. Any team that feels they were hard done by due to a referee mistake or any other matter is free to present an "appeal" to the league which will be dealt with in a fair and just way by SBL.
We will do our best to ensure we have enough referees to keep this league alive, you need to do your best to ensure the ones we're able to get stick around and don't quit to avoid consistent hassle. |

Congratulations
To Rockmono and Toukinup for breaking a combined Three SBL single-game records all in one game!
Rockmono was able to break both the Most MVP per game record, and the Most Goals per game record scoring 2318 MVP points (beating Darters record of 2068) and 13 goals (beating Riens and Darters joint record of 10). Rockmono was also able to match another record, the Most Points (goals + assists) in one game as he produced a combined total 14 points, matching Darters record. Toukinup was able to take the Most Assists per game record with 9 assists (beating Delcors record of 8).
With these two record-breaking starts, I'm sure both of these players will be eyeing up the possibility of winning the best mid and best offense awards, along with the statistical awards of most goals and most assists. |

Each game will be 15 minutes long, with the final game being 30 minutes long.
If the teams are tied after the full time, the next team to score will win.
Delays may NOT be used.
Any team who does not show up 5 minutes prior to gametime will be given a loss.
To get this schedule I used a piece of code to randomise the order. I have attached the code below to show you that the schedule given was fair. For those of you less code-savvy, don't worry about it, it's simply an array of the 10 squads and it shuffles them up and the code then outputs each one. I used the first "load" of the page as the schedule rather than messing with it.

SBL Season 10 Schedule
The schedule for SBL Season 10 is now up.
I created a piece of code to produce the schedule for us. Because of the nature of "schedules" and "conflicts" in schedules and my unwillingness to spend 10 hours coding some AI to doing schedules, I had to re-load the "script" 3 times to get a schedule that was inside the 9 weeks - this is simply by chance/luck and the reason the first two loads were not inside 9 weeks is due to how the code calculates the schedule.
Anyway. As this season is 9 weeks long, you've got 4 or 5 home games each. This is also purly random and has nothing to do with me. However the code did (somehow) give some teams 6 home games and others 3, so I changed some games home/away around to line them up.
The code is attached below so you can all view it if you wish. Pretty sweet piece of code, and I'll probably use it again next season as well as the ET schedule code :).

ET Eligibility
Eligibility for the ET is done in a unique way.
Should you join a squad on or before the ET, you will be eligible to play for them during the ET, AND week1 of SBL should you stay on that squad.
If you're on a squad, and leave the squad WITHOUT playing a game ON the day of the ET, and should you join another squad on the day of the ET you will be eligible to play for them both at the ET and during WEEK.
Essentially, the last day to change/join a squad and be eligible for the week1 is this sunday - although the site will say 1 day ineligble - we will ignore this for week1.
And should you wish to participate in the ET, you must be on a squad. Should you play for a squad and leave them during the ET, you will not be eligible to play for another squad during the ET, but you will be eligible for Week1.
And one final note, the (NP) next to players names is not waivable. (NP) means (not-playable), and is due to the player not having an SID check on the website. I've spent the past few days going through the list of (NP) players, and we're now left with just 4 players with (NP) status. 3 of them are in the active player pool and have double accounts, 1 of them is Dekar/Succuba who is currently serving a game ban.
If a new player joins your team before/on Sunday I will do my best to ensure his (NP) status is removed, but I can't promise this and referees will not be able to waive this status for you. |

SBL Committee Ruling
After deliberating over this issue for nearly a week, the committee has come to a decision.
Because of the magnitude of this issue we ensured enough time was allocated to this matter to discuss all possible outcomes.
However in the end a unanimous decision was made.
The player known as Gil, currently on the website as Hovella has been suspended from SBL participation for 1 SBL season.
His offenses in the most recent event are wide, but can be summerised below:
#1 - He impersonated another player (logging on as "Below" on the site)
#2 - He double squadded - Having two active aliases on squads is illegal
#3 - He tried to convince the committee to ban Below for double squadding
#4 - Defamation of character - He tried to portray Below as the player who disbanded 666 with the sole aim of deflecting abuse from himself, and damaging Below's reputation.
The committee takes these matters very seriously, and we feel our decision is fair and just in this situation. Gil will be able to appeal his ban after six (6) SBL weeks. |

SBL ET
As you should all know by now, the SBL ET is on Sunday 31st August. All squads with 12+ players will automatically be entered into this competition.
You have until Sunday 24th to get AT LEAST 12 players onto your team to be eligible for the ET and the season. Currently two squads have 12 players exactly, and two others have less than 12. If you do not have 12 players on your team by Sunday 24th you will not be entered into the ET.
As much as I do not want to force-fade squads, I don't want to allow a group of 10 players into the ET/League as the probability of you not showing 6 is higher than you might think. With the player pool full of 12 players, and the majority of x-Unb players still needing a home it should be easy to obtain 12 players. I myself managed to go from 0 to 17 in 4 days, and people hate me :). |

SBL Season 10 Format, posted by Rien
Wednesday, August 6th 2008
SBL Season 10 Format
We've came to a decision on the format of next season. We're going to remove divisions and stick with "everyone plays everyone once". We're also going to cap the number of squads to 10. We'd love to have 12 but we'd hate to have 11 so we've made the decision to cap the squads at 10 for this season. Hopefully all the squads currently around will be here for the season and for the duration of the season, but obviously if anything happens we'll be fair and just with how we continue at that point.
What we have decided to do is go with a unique playoff format. We're going to put the top 4 teams through into the "Playoff Division", and the remaining 6 squads through to the "BOTR Division". The teams in each division will play each other once, and after the games the top two teams from the "Playoff Division" will play in the SBL Championship Game. However in the "BOTR Division" after every team has played each other there, the top team will win the BOTR title.
We like this format because not only does it keep the season relativly short (just before christma) but it also keeps everyone playing throught the entire season, which was identified as an isssue. Regardless of how well you do, people just wish to continue playing SBL, even if they're not going to win the championship. So allowing people to continue playing SBL and potentially win a title, even if it's not the championship is a key feature of this season.
The rough format is outlined below:
10 teams - everyone plays everyone once
After 9 weeks of play, the top 4 make the Playoff Division, the remaining 6 make the BOTR Division
After 3 weeks of round robin play, the top two Playoff Division teams compete in the SBL Championship
After 5 weeks of round robin play, the top BOTR Division team is crowed the BOTR Champion
Week 0 - August 31st - ET
Week 1 - September 7th - Regular season week 1
Week 2 - September 14th - Regular season week 2
Week 3 - September 21th - Regular season week 3
Week 4 - September 28th - Regular season week 4
Week 5 - October 5th - Regular season week 5
Week 6 - October 12th - Regular season week 6
Week 7 - October 19th - Regular season week 7
Week 8 - October 26th - Regular season week 8
Week 9 - November 2nd - Regular season week 9
Week 10 - November 9th - BOTR round 1
Week 11 - November 16th - BOTR round 2 & Playoff round 1
Week 12 - November 23rd - BOTR round 3 & Playoff round 2
Week 13 - November 30th - Thanksgiving break (dumb americans)
Week 14 - December 7th - BOTR round 4 & Playoff round 3
Week 15 - December 14th - BOTR round 5 & SBL Championship
We'll then be breaking over christmas with no event (thank god) and starting SBL Season 11 sometime early January. |

World Tournament Week 1 Results
Mideast over Westside 9-6, MVP: Mishra
Canada over Westside 5-4, MVP: SpioMabio
Team Mideast USA over Team USA 7-4, MVP: Crazed_Penguin
East USA over World 7-1, MVP: Terwin
Mr. Poo
After voting over the issue in the committee, a majority vote of 6-3 has voted to keep Mr. Poo on the committee.
We do not condone nor support his recent actions but the majority does not feel he needs to lose his committee seat over this issue.
No action will be taken on him regarding any form of league related ban, as he broke no rule.
Dekar
The committee has voted to reduce his ban to 3 SBL games. Unlike other players, Dekar has attempted to play in pub and become an active part of the community again in a positive way. He appealed his ban and with all information considered the majority has voted to reduce his ban to 3 SBL games.
We look forward to welcoming Dekar back to the SBL Scene in Week 4 of SBL Season 10. |

Dirk Smallwood - History?, posted by Rien
Thursday, July 31st 2008
Dirk Smallwood
Dirk Smallwood has been indefinatly banned from SBL. He becomes only the second ever player to receive this ban and the first in nearly 9 seasons. Dirk Smallwood was originally banned for the WT, the forums and 1 SBL game for his actions inside SB. After this he continued to be racist and was thus banned from an entire season.
He once again continued to be racist repeatedly and left the committee with no choice. A majority vote has decided Dirk Smallwood will never play SBL again. He'll be able to appeal this decision at the start of SBL Season 12 if he so chooses, but I don't know many people that would stick around for 2 seasons to play again. If he is found to be attempting to play SBL in another alias, his appeal will be indefinatly denied. |

SBL ASG & Committee Rule and Committee Bans {UPDATED}, posted by Rien
Monday, July 28th 2008
SBL ASG
The SBL All-star game took place last night in its normal fashion - late & lacking starters. We were able to field 2 full 7v7 teams but many reserves were used, Second Goalie even had to step in at D!
In the end Team 1 was beaten by Team 2 in a close game, which was quite entertaining to play in. Second Goalie had a good showing at stand-in defender but was no match for the "jukes" of King Donkey. One was able to rack up an incredible 10 saves while only allowing 6 goals in what was a 6-5 loss for his team.
We'll be re-thinking the ASG concept for next season, as it's simply not worthwhile. Maybe the ASG should be changed to All Stars Vs. New Guns where we try and get 7 vets to square off against 7 "new-er" players, as yesterday we had plenty of new-er players in spec watching, and some in-game playing.
Committee Rule
The Committee has voted in favour of moderating the ?soccer chat. The majority of the Committee has now decided that normal SBL spam/racism rules will now apply in the soccer chat in game. This ruling will come into effect on August 1st, this is to give players enough time to check the website before breaking a rule they did not know existed.
Thank you to SpioMabio for requesting this committee clarification/vote, as we've now cleared up a long running misunderstanding between the league and the soccer chat.
The committee is also currently voting on appropriate action to take on SV and Dirk Smallwood. Dirk Smallwood has already been removed from SBL for the entire WT and one SBL game, but since this time both of these players have been found to be breaking rules by continuing to be racist. The decision on these matters should be decided within the next couple of days, and you'll be notified of any action the committee decides to take on these two individuals.
Committee Bans
After polling the committee and discussing the recent violations by both SV and Dirk Smallwood we've came to a majority decision. SV will be banned from the WT, the forums and 1 SBL game. Dirk Smallwood will have his ban increased from the WT, forums and 1 SBL game to the WT, forums and 1 SBL season. |

SBL Committee - Rule Changes & Bans, posted by Rien
Wednesday, July 23rd 2008
SBL Committee - Rule Changes & Bans
The SBL Committee has voted over a few important issues and we've came to a majority vote on them all.
First of all we voted on changing the forum rules. The majority of the committee has voted to change our forum rules so that offense on the forums (spamming, racism) will no longer effect your in-game participation. It should be noted that if you avoid forum bans with additional names you may still face in-game punishment, but in general for racism, spamming and harassment you will no longer face in-game punishment. This rule is not effective as of yet, so your actions currently can effect your in-game participation. The rule will come into effect upon meeting pre-determined critera which will remain private, but should be completed inside 2 weeks. You'll be notified when it's effective.
The majority of the committee has also voted to maintain the SBL rule of SB actions effecting your SBL participation. So for the foreseeable future any action you take in SB can effect your SBL participation.
The committee has reviewed the information presented about Dirk Smallwood and has come to a majority decision of banning him from the forums for 3 weeks, for one SBL game, and from the entire World Tournament.
That's all we've voted on that you need to know about. The majority of the committee has agreed with all of the above. |

World Tournament Schedule, Awards and ASG, posted by Rien

World Tournament Schedule
The schedule is simple. Everyone plays each other once, the winner is the team with the most points at the end of the competition.
We will be using the SBL points system (3 for a win, 0 for loss, 2 for an OT win, 1 for an OT loss) for this competition. Because I wish to stick to 4 weeks, each week two teams will play two games so that we can stick to our deadline. The only exception to this is week 4 in which no team will play more than once.
Schedule
Week 1 - August 3rd
East USA vs. World
Mideast USA vs. USA
Canada vs. Westside
Mideast USA vs. Westside
Week 2 - August 10th

Championship, BOTR, Referees and Roster Lock., posted by Rien

Championship
Congratulations to Nation of Domination! on becoming SBL Champions! They've broken all the record books by being the only squad to ever win the title from a seed lower than 2nd - and they certainly did it the hard way by defeating the #1 and #2 seeded squads during the playoffs. This will go down in history as a truly remarkable turnaround on what appeared to be a poor and underperforming season.
ShadowNNC finally becomes an SBL Championship-winning captain after running Nation of Domination! for 7 seasons, keeping a squad alive even when it lost a good majority of it's players. It's amazing the job he's been able to do over the seasons and he deserves this title.
BOTR
In the BOTR championship, Ole were able to beat CAH in just two games to become the first winners of this new competition. The series was let down slightly by the lack of referees in attendance, but as throughout the rest of the season Mode and Drekk were able to step up and not only referee the games, but also play in them to.
Referees
I hope you'll all join me in thanking our referees for their time and effort. This season the staff has officiated over 100 games inside 20 weeks of SBL play, and without their time and effort SBL would simply not be possible. No reward is given to SBL referees and there is no true motivation for being one, so hopefully you'll help ensure referees continue to keep the league alive by showing how much you appreciate them.
Roster Lock
The roster lock is off. You have around 5-6 weeks to change squads before the ET. |
